Three Self Motivation Tips
That Turn Strong Emotions To Your Favor & Success

Authored by William G. DeFoore, Ph.D.

These self motivation tips will surprise you. Every human being experiences the emotions of envy, anger and desire, and we're often taught that these are bad, and that we should avoid them.

Surprise! You can learn to use your natural envy, anger and desire to your immediate and lasting benefit. The fact is that when you simply judge these emotions as bad, and attempt to suppress them, they sometimes just get worse.

But when you use the tips and techniques we will outline for you here, you will actually transform these otherwise destructive feelings into something that is good for you and your relationships as well.

Here's an overview of how it works:

Self Motivation Tips
To Transform Envy, Anger & Desire

Turn Envy Into Opportunity

Sounds strange, I know, but it works. Envy is a natural human emotion, and everyone feels it at least a little bit at some point.

We just naturally have a tendency to compare ourselves to others, as you'll learn in this excellent podcast on NPR's Hidden Brain.

So, since it's going to happen anyway, why not make it work for you, instead of just making you feel bad? As you go through life and see others with happiness, health, success or love that you want and don't have, the feeling of envy is bound to come up.Here's how to turn it into an opportunity instead of a problem:

  • First, be aware that you're seeing something you like or want about another person's life or circumstances. The trick is to be conscious of this, and not just let it run in the background and steal your joy.
  • Now reach down deep inside and find that part of you who can be happy for this person. You don't have to love them or think they're a good person, just say to yourself something like, "Wow! Good for them! That's great that they are so fortunate."
  • Then say to yourself, "I wish the same good fortune for myself. That's a really good thing they're experiencing, and I choose that for myself." You get the idea. What you're doing here is correcting the really painful part of envy...turning "I can't have that" to "I can have that."

The tricky part here is to make it work in your mind. You don't have to convince yourself that you can have the same amount of money, the same house, the same relationships, but just something good in that direction that will make you feel good.

Your goal is simply to celebrate and enjoy the good things you see around you in other people's lives, instead of being brought down by them.

Turn Healthy Anger Into Strong Motivation

Healthy anger is simply powerful emotional energy that fuels effective action. Think of M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers), and how they channeled their anger directly into effective action that has made the roads and highways safer for all of us.

Let's say you want some self motivation tips on how to be consistent with your diet and exercise. We'll walk through the steps with that goal in mind.

Here's how it would work to motivate yourself with healthy anger:

self motivation tips
  1. Picture the sad, scary picture of your future self if you stay with a poor diet and don't exercise. Imagine a wheelchair, hospitals, lots of meds, loss of normal functions...a very tragic ending that you definitely want to avoid.
  2. Now get angry at that picture of your future self, and say to yourself, "I'm not going there. I won't choose the easy road, knowing it's going to get harder and harder as I travel it."
  3. Finally, create a mental picture of the future self you want to be...fit, healthy, happy, and enjoying your life with friends and family. Use the fierce focus of your healthy anger to make up your mind that you're going to do the hard stuff of eating healthy foods and exercising.
  4. After doing steps 1. and 2. a few times, just shift to step 3. and keep doing it over and over again, for the rest of your life.

These self motivation tips will work, but only if you use them enough to become skilled and proficient. So, it's not a matter of whether these tools work, it's a matter of whether you use them enough for them to have a chance to work.

Make up your mind to give it 21 days straight. Do this exercise daily, and see what happens.

Consistently Generate Productive Desire

Desire, like envy and anger often is seen in a negative light. In fact, desire is an extremely powerful and positive emotion that can be used to motivate you to succeed in reaching all of your goals.

All of the self motivation tips in this article contain the use of desire as a point of focus for what you want going forward. However, there are some very specific ways you can use your desire to make sure it's working for you and not against you.

Here are the steps:

  • Be very clear on what you want. Picture it and imagine it in great detail, and don't hold back in making it exactly what you want. Remember...your imagination is your creative laboratory!
  • Next, brainstorm all of the reasons you think you will (not might or may, but will) have it. Push yourself here. Make sure you think of all of the possible reasons that this will happen.
  • Now step into the results of this wonderful thing that has happened. You're in the creative laboratory of your imagination here, so don't hold back. Feel it, taste it, savor it and enjoy every aspect of the new developments that have resulted from the fulfillment of your desire.

These are the same methods used by many great athletes and successful people across the board. Learn more self motivation tips here.
