To Become The Good Parent You Want To Be

Authored by William G. DeFoore, Ph.D.

You're looking for parenting help because you're already a good parent. Only the best parents care enough to seek help. You're smart enough to know that being a good parent is one of the most challenging things you can face as a human being.

This is a place for you to learn about positive parenting, and to offer your own wisdom and ideas, if you like. Take advantage of this opportunity to help and be helped.

Your job as a good parent is not to mold or shape your children into who you want them to be. Your child has gifts to offer to this world, and your task and wonderful opportunity are to help them to bring those wonderful gifts and talents to fruition in the way that works best for them.

Let's look further at what it means to be a positive parent.

What Is Positive Parenting Help?

Positive parenting means avoiding criticism and judgment, while looking at what is good, right and working about your child as s/he is.

Specifically...

  • Choose to always hold your child in the highest possible regard...especially when their behavior or condition is troubling you.
  • Be sure you understand your child's basic emotional needs, and commit to meeting those needs to the best of your ability.
  • Understand the need for healthy boundaries in your relationship with your child, so they know where they stop and you start. This includes the important arena of  limit setting and consistency.
  • Positive parenting also includes your own commitment to your health and happiness. If you go too far in putting your child's needs above your own, you will find yourself exhausted and resentful.
  • Unless you're a single parent, your relationship with your spouse or co-parent needs lots of positive, loving attention as well. Your children will learn as much from observing your relationship as they will from what you teach them as an individual parent.

There is always more right than wrong with your child, but sometimes you will have to look for it...and that process of looking for it is very healthy to you as a positive parent.

These are just a few highlights of the types of positive parenting help you will receive here. Now it's your turn! Fill in the form below with your story, suggestions or question, and get started on your journey to help and be helped.
